Back in the mid 90's..hunter green was a HUGE hit. I of course, jumped on board and bought a farmer's table, with a matching hutch, and at the time, was wonderful, however, after living with it for 12 years I've felt the need to upgrade. (hows that for a run-on sentence?) As things go, needing to upgrade really didn't fit into the budget...as I really couldn't find it within me to spend the money it would cost.
I've researched.....checked out blogs, decorating sites, checked books out of the library trying to figure out what I could do with my existing pieces. The thought of the time I'd need to invest to do a "redo" didn't seem so fun, and throw in the fact that my Dad does amazing work crafting wood furniture, cupboards, etc.....and knowing he's NOT a fan of painted wood....(furniture, or trim:-)....I couldn't decide what I should do.
I then found this amazing blog called:Nesting Place. (check it out here!) She's creative, crafty, and very inspiring. As I've read through her blog, I finally found the courage to "redo" my furniture.
Without further ado....here are two "before" shots.....please note..these photo's were taken BEFORE we had a digital camera, so I had to snap the pictures from my scrapbook.
This first picture clearly shows you WAY too much WOOD. Everything blends:
I'm sure Ashley will not be pleased that she happens to be in this photo...(sorry Ash)...but here's a glimpse at the table.
Ashley agreed to help me on this project, and although it took 8 hours...it was well worth it. We hauled everything, piece...by piece out to our garage where major work was taking place. We first sanded...(yes Dad..I said sanded...all the finish off of all of the wood) ...them primed...then painted one coat....and then the second coat.
Let's just say that we are glad we LOVE the finished product as we were so sore!!
And did I tell you that I only spent a total of $30.00!!! I was able to get the paint, table cloth, and runners all for $30.00 (I had the primer...and the pretty lamp, and plate and plate stand were my Mother's Day gifts)
Here's the finished work:
If you are wondering about the table cloth...I bought that by the yard, and ironed a hem. THANK-YOU Mom, for showing me how to do that, since I don't know how to sew. It was SO easy, and it looks like I hemmed the edges.
The last piece of this project is to find hardware for the hutch door, and I'm hoping to do that on Saturday.
Next, I'm wanting to make curtains...out of red/white toile. Of course, The Nester, has been so kind to give me some pointers!!
So it's out with traditional "country"...and French Country is slowing moving in.
Wow, I'm so impressed! And, inspired. I have some pieces I need to paint as well, but never knew how. I need to research it.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks amazing. Great job!
AWESOME job Kim!!! Doesn't it feel good to use what you already own and make it into something you love!! I have several projects I want to tackle, maybe I will do a before and after post as well. It is inspiring to see what others are up to. I can't wait to see the curtains that will change the room even more!!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Kelley
You did such a fantastic job!!
ReplyDeletevery inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great. Love the table cloth also. Can I borrow you and Ashely? I need some help in my kitchen. I have a wood table with green legs and the chairs have green legs as well. I decided to paint them black and about 5 months ago I painted one chair. I now have a table with 5 green legged chairs and one black legged chair. :) I love Nesting place. She has great ideas. i just need to follow through with what I start.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Linda
I love it it. I love the contrasting colors. Forgive me but I can't tell by photo if it's a dark brown or is it black. It looks dark brown. At any rate the dark contrasts to the oak really looks good! Can you believe you saved SO much money. I love how you did the bar stools also to bring that dark color over the the kitchen area.
ReplyDeleteWonder what it would look like if you applied the same color to that little trim above your cabinets? Maybe not but just thinking out loud.
I'm very impressed. Good job, Kim!
So, when are you coming to my house? Haha.
OH I love it!!!! I too loved the hunter green!!! And...I also love to iron a hem hee-hee! I'll tell you ...in a pinch the hot glue gun works wonders for a hem on pants! *wink*!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous work girls....come over anytime...I have things that need your beautiful touch!!!
Love you!
WOW! What a great project with a beautiful finish. We have one of those dining room tables, but ours in is white and in serious need of some help! Everything looks great.
ReplyDeleteKim, you and Ash did a wonderful job. How pretty it all looks. I love how it all is coming together. Now please you have to show the valances when you are done. Any chance you can give directions on your table cover also and the no sew hem. I have a piece of material and I would love to do that with mine. Again wonderful job my friend.
ReplyDeleteI love the finished project! It's lovely... I also love French Country. It is great when we can re-use what we already have. Our next project is our kitchen. We are going to re-finish our cabinets! YIKES!!! It's going to be a job, but we are up to the task. You have inspired me.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Good for you. You must be so proud of your accomplishment. How nice that your daughter helped too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks really great.
Now that is an amazing feat. It should inspire me since I need to do the same thing, but I just can't seem to take on this kind of project.
ReplyDeletePS I love the nesting place. Too bad she doesn't live by me, then maybe I would be able to attempt refinishing my dining room set with a little help.
